The Anabaptists who remained in the Netherlands and in the north of Germany, united themselves under the leaderhsip of the former Frisian preacher Menno Simons. His ideal was a church of saints. He said to his followers that they had to lead a pious and peaceful life. These Mennonites were characterized by strict church discipline and avoidance of earthly things. They rejected things like taking an oath, Infant Baptism and military services. Later on, they moved to Canada and the United States. Until this day on, the Amish people lead a life separated from the the world. They distance themselves from many aspects of modern life.
